Sheesh... 71 emails on making a better throttle body? Buncha zealots!

Ok, I spent from 5am til just now (18 hours) on a 2.8 throttle body thats clearly head & shoulders above everything else out there. I can easily shave 50% off that time by having parts pre-made and ready to assemble. It'll be the best you can buy, bar none as a throttle body but it will come at a price.

You can already buy these as simple bore/sleeve jobs for between $289 & $395 at the usual suspects stores. Additionally TDL Racing sells one thats bored only for $200.

Mine are milled, not bored to 1.420" then sleeved back down to 1.350" finish I.D. Then I turn a 7075 aluminum sleeve on the lathe, contour a velocity bell on the intake end of the sleeve and polish the entire inside to a mirror chrome finish and epoxy it in place with JB Weld 575*F epoxy. Then I grind down the butterfly shaft screws that protrude into the bores and polish the shafts where the screws were (you can see more of this in the pics). Then hone/polish the entire intake area above the bores. Then I "JB Weld" a machined shim in the primary-to-secondary throttle linkage to allow the secondary bore to engage and transition opening 20% sooner than the stock TB. Right at 40% larger primary bore so it should be very noticeable off the line.

What does it do? I duno but it WILL breathe!! I'll know more this weekend when I install it in my sons 94 90S FWD/automatic. We made him a velocity stack to go in the stock airbox last weekend with great results so it'll be interesting to see what this adds. Then we're going to build an aluminum thin-wall intake pipe with silicone sleeves and a small silicone reducer at the throttle body... still sourcing parts on that one.

Cost on the throttle body will be $495 and will include overnight shipping to the lower 48. I'll loan one to someone in Denver with a 2.8 automatic (auto/manual are different and I only have a spare automatic TB right now)to help test and I'll install it so we can start getting some feedback from someone besdes my son (who will probably be a little biased and is only 19). I will require your throttle body as a security deposit during the test. At the end of 30 days (or sooner, you decide) you can have yours back or buy the one on your car for $400 and I keep yours as a core so I can do an "exchange program" and people don't have to incur any down-time. For the $100 discount you write reports here of your findings, uninfluenced by me. Good, bad, right or wrong, makes me no nevermind. Just write what ya feel in the seat of yer britches. I'd like to also install the UrQuattro airhorn mod inside your airbox so I need a car with stock or K&N panel air filter... no cone set-ups. It's an easy un-do as it's a press-fit without adhesive or fasteners. Deal? Soon as I lay my hands on a used, low-mile, known-good manual transmission TB I'll want another local tester... same rules.

Meanwhile I need sleep. Here's the pics of todays throttle body.

Default Looks very pro!

I have a bored throttle body and you can notice the difference in initial throttle response, in my view it's a mod for the drag strip style enthusiast and the automatic gearbox user.

Manual gearbox users it can make for jerky city driving and can make your car lurch forward more rapidly and extra smooth clutch control is needed when in heavy traffic.

Default How much differance(measurable) does your TB improve flow over the "stock" unit?

Namely measured on a Flow bench! ;o)

Default I'm in the process of making a dual bore flange for my flow bench so I can measure the results...

All I have now is single bore and 5-runner setups (single bore TB's and 20V turbo int/exh). Gimme a couple days but I have to flow it before installing it on my sons car Sat or Sun. And I'm going to flow this one under vacuum instead of positive pressure as I've got a new (virgin) NTSI certified, Grade 4, LED readout vacuum gauge that is guaranteed .025% accurate full-sweep from 0-30Hsig. I always try to flow things with source-air emulating stock, ie; +pressure for all exh manifolds/turbo intakes & TB's. Vacuum for NA intakes and TB's. Doing it this way keeps things honest and apples-to-apples.

Soon as I know, you'll know.

Default Maybe I'm not understanding this...

We pay $495 for your TB? Then you pay us $400 for our stock TB?

Default the post says he (the tester) can buy the modified one on his car and I keep...

his original to have around as a core exchange for the next person so there's no down-time when/if people order these. A convoluted way of saying $400 if the tester wants to keep it AND I keep his. That way the tester gets a $95 discount if he chooses to keep the modified TB and I get to keep his stock TB.

Any clearer?

Default Re: I am definitley interested....

....I have a 1993 90 CSQ, 5 speed, with the 2.8L V6...I will be looking forward to the results on your sons car, and any more progress you might make. Nice work by the way, looks better than the TDL one on their website.

Default

would this work on a 12V A4? I'd be interested in that.
