Hi all,
Long time no post but I had some issues with my 01E 6 speed transmission (let's just say, the shop "exchanged" it for a 5 speed 01A and we've been in "discussions" since). To sum it up, the AEB is installed, running, and CA BAR approved (legit swap). Now, this is the first week I actually took possession (my truck wouldn't start) and I really like the drive except this "angst" feeling about the 5 speed. But, do I really need a 6 speed (besides the chi chi factor).
Opinions please! This would be my daily driver (I commute 60-70 miles/day) and occasional track car.
Cheers,
Joel

Why? What was wrong with the 6spd?
In any case, there are a few benefits for going with the 01E 6spd: namely, the wider first gear which is much more apt to handling high torque and hp numbers (provided you have the right clutch setup). I believe the ratios of the first 3 gears are the same as the 5spd, so no gain in accelleration. The added gear will give you better fuel mileage while cruising on the highway, not to mention a quieter cabin. Oh, and then there's the "chi chi" factor...
In my opinion, it's a lot of time, effort and $$$ for what you get out of it. But then again, thesecars are a sickness. That's why my 6spd will be going in in a few weeks...;-)

They do take a bit of punishment in the 400+bhp range, but are also known ot break up in that range. The 01E's, however, do not.
I'd be mighty pissed if I had a 01E lined up, and give a 01A.
BTW, got pics of the glass roof in the 80 yet? Good to see you are keeping it!

Last time I checked, thats pushing 700hp at the crank. Treat the gearbox right, and it won't break. Only reason why Javad/Christian broke 4th gear on the 80q20vt was they lifted a wheel or four off (well, ok, the car got really light at the crest of a hill while under full boost in 4th, landed and pretty much killed 4th as soon as the car got traction). He posted all about it on MG. If he can take it racing, and HARD, and have it last for the better part of a year with 500-600whp, I'd say don't knock the 01A.

How many hard miles did Javad have on that 01A? Not as much as you can put on a 01E before it begins to ever show signs of stress.
An 01E is a better choice, and the 01A will be a liability, period.
