is the power steering pump a really common part to fail?

My PS pump is on it's last leg. When I start the car up I can hear it making a pumping sound like it's not pumping constant fluid. I also had about a week where if I was idling or not in gear my brakes had no pressure, I've been told this is because the PS pump also provides hydraulic pressure to the brake system.
I had a local mechanic check it out and he confirmed that the PS pump is about to die and that it's to the point where there's metal shavings all in the PS fluid. He said these pumps are notorious for not lasting more than 6 months. Apparently his son has a CQ and he's had to replace the PS pump 3 times in it and he has soeone elses CQ in the shop today that has the same problem as mine.
The issue I'm running into is that he can't get PS pumps from his parts source right now and he's having a hard time finding out why they are out of them. He also thinks he may decide to not replace this pump for me because the pump comes with a 1 year warranty and if the pump fails he's supposed to replace it and eat the labor cost, and he's been doing that too often.
I've never hear this mentioned as a problem here on the site, am I getting a line of BS or is there some truth to this?
I was thinking about picking up one from Shokan but if these things are really this fragile then it's not worth buying a used one.

to my experience they are not prone to failing.
CGT does have a small leak though :-/
Never heard anyone on this side (EU) complayning about bad pumps.

every 2 years. Get a good rebuilt one from ZF and you should be fine for at least 4-5 years. Also, too much tension in the belt can wear out the bearing on the pump pretty quick!

Since my mech is having trouble sourcing a PS pump I was going to see if I could locate one for myself. It died on the way into work this morning.

How many times do you think I've bought something from this ZF company before. I'll give you a hint, 0. Thanks for the help.
