Q: on a rear sway bar for an '89 90q20V
Hi Gang,
Like most of you here I've had a gutful of understeer and so am looking at fitting a rear sway bar on a '89 90q20V. I've searched the archives are discovered that:
- Late B3's have a rear sway bar as standard (14mm), but that it's pointless to fit that one as it does next to nothing.
- The most cost effective solution is to use (and modify depending on what other parts are available from the 4k) the front 21mm Bar from a non-Q Audi 4000.
- 2bennet sell a 19mm kit but it costs US$495 which with the exchange rate and delivery costs translates to around AUS$25,000. ;-)
So, almost everyone recommends the 4k bar, but the trouble is that out here in Australia we didn't get the 4k or the 5k. I suspect it's just that out here the 4k and 5k were called the 100 and 200 respectively, but regardless, there just wasn't that many 100's and 200's of that vintage imported to Australia and therefore available at the wreckers.
What to do????

The 100, 200, and 5k are all the same car. The 4k/80/90 is smaller....
you need a bar from one of the smaller (B-chassis) cars, the 4000, 80, or 90, whatever it is called there.
Other than that I don't know what to do except try to find something from another car that will fit. There is nothing special about swaybars from one car or another, all that matters is that it's the diameter you want, has the lever arm length you want, and doesn't hit anything through the suspension travel. Maybe a part from a Subaru or something could be made to fit if you can't find an Audi part?

An interesting discovery I made yesterday concerning 4000 sway bars:
The '87 4000 quattro front sway bar I have here is EXACTLY the same as my '90 CQ front bar. Maybe a front bar from a B3 FWD might do the trick on your rear. I want a smaller bar for my rear as well, but I got this 4K quattro bar for next to nothing so I thought I'd pick it up.

Thanks everyone there's some good info there.....
You know, I really shouldn't paste questions when I'm at work. Work always seems to get in the way of the important stuff..... :-)

Whiteline.....Australian company makes adjustable rear bar for S2 coupes...
all you would have to do is either custom make some mounting points on the rear subframe or pick up a '91 car rear subframe..
