I have the same car, so here goes (and I believe that only the '88s are like this):
Start car and then insert spare fuse into fuel injection relay (use an actual spare fuse, not one of the "spares" beside the relay) for 4+ seconds, then remove. Engine check light will start blinking first code eg: 2312 temp sensor. Insert fuse again for 4 seconds to move on to next code. If there is nothing you get 'solid' blinks (long).

Hope this is what you were looking for.

Bear in mind that the '88 (I think) doesn't store codes after the ignit. is turned off, so you may have to drive around to generate some fault codes.

Default Here is what you do...

Take out your instrument cluster and put a bulb in the check engine light socket (unless you have a california car, it will be covered by tape). You must buy the bulb. Once the bulb is installed and the instrument cluster is back in, turn the igntion on but don't start the car. Stick a spare fuse in the top of the fuel pump relay for 4 seconds then remove. The first code will now flash on your check engine light bulb. Stick the fuse back in and remove after 4 seconds to pull the next code and so on until you get to the end of the codes.

Default There is also another way to do it if you don't feel like taking out your instrument cluster.
