i had my car up on the lift yesterday at work and i was prying to test out my lower ball joints when i noticed that the whole strut would go up and down, as if the bolts and 24 mm nut on top were not tight enough. However after lowering the car and looking at both sides they were plenty tight. Anyone else notice this? OR are my struts that blow, boge turbos (soft as poop
and really can't wait to get my bilstiens and H&R Race)

then watch the mount up in the strut tower from below to see if it's moving. Watch the shock shaft, shiny part, to see if it is moving up and down.
Cheers,

1. Make sure top strut retaining cap is tight and torqued to spec. If it loosens the strut can/will move up/down within its tube and hammer the underside of the threaded cap upwards moving it away from the strut top. You cannot judge this by seeing if the strut cap is tight or hard to turn as they will oft-times be tight but have hammered the bottom side of the cap upwards while the cap remains tight or rusted/seized.
2. As a_CQ said below; old shocks can have "free-travel" a slight amount of space where the strut tube moves up/down freely before meeting any resistance/dampening. Boge/KYB are notorious for that. Its very rare on Bilsteins/Konis.
3. If "the whole strut goes up and down" odds are either #1/#2 or a little bit of both is occuring.

Reason I ask is thats the "only" way correct torque can be determined/achieved while strut tubes are held in a vise. No way to get a torque wrench between coils on the spring. I've also never known how Boge expects people to torque their caps down when they have a round nut collar. If you can, please explain that to me. Champagne uses a pipe wrench on their installs but I'm glad its not an issue I have to deal with.
But I'm with you on old Boges. I just cant like those for several reasons, even when new.
