Replaced timing belt, now won't start

Hello,
I just replaced a timing belt on a 80 4 cylinder. It now won't start. I have checked the timing marks many times (both on the camshaft and crankshaft). I set the timing up before I took the belt off, and simply slipped on the new belt (with a new pulley). I checked for fuel, for fuel injection and for spark. All are fine. The car does crank but won't fire. I tried to adjust the ignition timing, got the car to start for a second or two, although it was running terrible. I checked the position of the camshaft for no.1 cylinder at top dead, and both valves were closed. I checked the piston travel for no.1 cylinder at top dead and forund that it was at the top of its travel.
Are there any tricks to these timing belts? I don't know how to read fault codes on these vehicles, so I haven't checked them. I did remove the distrubtor cap with the engine at top dead, and found the rotor buton seems to be half way between eletrode 1 and 2. This is strange, as the car was running before I pulled it apart, and I am sure that the cam timing is correct.
Thanks!

The intermediate shaft has to be timed also on these motors, line up the marks to TDC on cam and crank. Then pull your distributor cap and see where it's pointing. Should be a line and you want to have it as close to centered on the rotor as you can.
Headed to work, sorry this is so brief. I'll try and check in later to follow up.

I know it sounds dumb, but I mixed them up on my GF's Jetta once and sure enough it wouldn't start!
