Default The saga continues! "The dissappearing Backlights"

Let me start by saying... I hate the FU^*IN! car!
I can't afford to buy another car but I can afford to repair this one when I have the cash.
All that aside. The problem that I am having THIS time is my backlights in my instrument panel and the one(s) in my shifter, radio, A/C heater controls ect. will not light up. The clock must have its own backlight on a different circuit cause it is lit up. I checked my fuse for the backlights and it is fine. What gives? I did notice that if I push the button for my deproster the triangle lights up. Both thw backlight and the indicator light (I belive) get juice from the same sorce. Anyone have any ideas? I think I know what could be happening, but I want you alls input first.
Many thanx!

The bulbs are simply burnt ou, a ***common*** accurance for the older aud's. Go to radio shack and pic up a couple 12v mini lamps (search the forum for the part #). I read earlier that you broke something while trying to fix one of these bulbs?

I can't imagen 20 or so bulbs blowing out all at once. Most of the time when a bulb blows (from what I seen) it flashes for a mil sec. But I did check about 6 of them to see if that was it, but that wasn't the fact.
Also. I forgot to mention that I tested the wires that are connected to the backlight bulb in my shifter (the solder joins are exposed) for any sign of voltage, there was nothing. Normaly this light is on when I turn either my parking lights or headlights on, so I know there should be some kind of voltage comming through to light the bulb. And again, I did check the fuse. It is fine.
Any more ideas? Thanx.

Default Could it be the dimmer switch?

What I was thinking is that the dimmer switch that is on the instrument panel went bad some how.
I haven't looked at it yet, but if that went bad (I think) it wouldn't allow any current to go through to the backlight bulbs. What do you all think? Anyone else have this happen?

Default Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner! and i'm out $60 =(

Thanx for the kind words Audi 90 (88). If you only knew all the things that I had to fix, get fixed and need to be fixed on this car you would understand my fustration. But say what you want "yawn".
Thanx for the responses guys. I check all the fuses this evening when I got home. In fact it was a fuse (orange #5 not sure what slot). I didn't know that there was a seperate fuse for those lights, I was just going by what I read on the fusebox cover. Wish I would of read the posts before I spent $60 for parts Heh.

Default Trust me even.

Trust me even. I bought the car for 2k thinking that I was getting a deal. Car sounded great at the auction, but after a day of driving, the bandaids that they put on it fell off, right then was the start of it all. Let me give you a break-down.
AT tranny rebuild. $1380.
Misc parts from junk yard $350~.
Parts and labor to get motor even start but still is rough $760.
Fuel Pump $178
To get the thing fixed needed to pass inspection
$380.

$1380
$350
$760
$380
$178 +
---------
$3048

I didn't include the countless hours I spent do some of the smaller repairs myself cause I could not afford to pay someone else to do it. I work 7days a week 55~ hours a week or more. I stayed up till 4am working on this car. YES i'm just a little fustraded that it is still not working right. I have had a friend of a friend check the work I did so I know it is not me. He would have done the work for me but I can't afford to even pay him. I sold alot of personal things so I could pay for these reapirs, so i'm not so happy about that.
So I guess my fault here is, I do not give up on things. I don't know, these could be the best car I even owned.
Just my 2 cents. 8)
