has anybody thought about the ramifications to your car and your wallet by doing this change-over?
By changing to a Euro bumper(sedan or CQ) you run the risk of getting your car demo'ed by somebody just tapping you from behind either in traffic or at the mall. Euro bumpers I think Alex at Europrice has explained will take 3mph hit..maximum. That's all. It will crumple like glass in anything stronger. And if you think you can use your standard DOT rebar, think again! Can't be done without throwing loads of cash into such a project. Both cuatrokoop and I have refrained from changing our rear bumpers for just the reasons I have laid out. We like our cars and don't relish getting them trashed for the sake of looks.

I have held off also.
I can keep from driving into someone (front eurobumper) but I really can't stop someone from rear-ending me. That is why I am holding off on the rear bumper.

I agree and a step farther...
I do like the look of the euro bumpers, that being said.
If you are in an accident, any accident. Say you get hit from behind and the person ends up getting hurt or killed, and the word gets out that you had a euro bumper (a good lawyer would find out) that you willfully put on. That just sounds like a lawsuit, or manslaughter.
I do still like the look of the bumpers, it is also against the law to put them on and drive on the road, that is the reason I probably won't put either the front or rear on.
I know, I have RS2's, I even feel guilty about that. So what if they shine better they are still not DOT legal. It's the law.

like a step off the cliff
Can you really think the difference between a US bumper with shocks and a euro bumper with rebar can be the difference between life and death for a CQ passenger ? What a ludricrous intention. My euro rear with rebar will result in more damage in an accident than to the car than the US bumper, but you're overstating the protection a US bumper gives you. If there was some Pinto-like issue re the fuel tank, then the S2 would be labeled a death trap, which it isn't. Are you feeling guilty about the DEs or just uneasy about being caught ? Is there a guide you use to determine which laws are worth breaking ? The risk of a fine from the DEs is much greater in an order of magnitude than that of bumper changes. If you are framing the risk, maybe it is best to delineate it a little better.

The rear bumper is still DOT in my car as Panzer said. I've taken a hard hit in a 3-car accident (car one ran red light and didn't see the line of 20 cars stopped dead in front of him, car two was stopped behind me, I was car 3). Tweaked the bumper assembly as a whole, rear alignment was slightly off which was left out of the ins. claim because it was only 1mm. My car drove away. I don't think I would have only had 1mm of misalignment if I ran with a euro rear bumper (hit was slightly off-center). The 2nd car was taken away with a smushed nose and tail, puking coolant (the cop asked the girl, so are you going to drive it home? I was like, uh no, see that green stuff, thats coolant from her car, she'll need a tow truck). 3rd car also was towed away (child was not in a seatbelt either!!!). 3rd car had to replace their car, the 2nd car, and pay the body shop bill to R&R the bumper on my car as well as replace some hydraulic stuff (foot was on the brake, pressure spike blew the seals on the front half of the pump). If I hadn't kept my foot on the brake, I would have hit the car in front of me. I decided I did not want to fully test the S2 front bumper that day...
For those people who are building a race car, for track only, get rid of the DOT stuff, its just excess weight. For those who drive street cars, keep the DOT stuff unless you cannot (even with a 10vt/20vt conversion, you can integrate an FMIC behind the DOT bumper, its tight, but I've seen it done on Rick Houck's 10vt car).
