I'm trying to lower the actual height of me shift rod. I''m thinking i can just take out the center console and hack off about a inch and a half and then just re thread it. And I'm wondering if anyone has done this and knows the size tap that I'd need. I gotta go buy it and i need the exact size. I'm not talking about the throw of the shifter but the actual height of the shifter. I know I'm using the wrong word for it. Shift rod, shifter, **** I can't think of the right word. Also, I'm gonna be doing some 2w bulb swaps in the cluster and i need to know how many bulbs are sittin back there? Anyone remember/ is it four behind the cluster and three behind the aux gauges? I'm in a late 95 90.

For the aux gauges:
If you're 8C-S-030 000 or below you use clear glass bulbs...if you're 8C-S-030 001 or above you need the bulbs with the little red condoms on them.
I forget how many you need to do the 2W upgrade for the IC though...plenty of folks here have done it, so I'm sure someone will pipe up soon...

need 7 bulbs (or 6 if you plan to remove one of the tach bulbs.)
Oh, and 1" is the preferred amount to chop off the shift arm. *u could* go 1.25" but that'd be pretty short... and I certainly wouldn't suggest you take off any more. I did 1" and it's now @ a nice looking and comfortable height. Sorry I don't know which tap to use; not off the top of my head at least. 3/8" rings a bell but don't take my word for it. good luck
check yah later

It's not necessary. Yeah right. I just finished and my gauges light up like a mother****er now. And plus two of my three aux gauge bulbs were out so they DID need to be replaced.
I cut just over an inch off the shift arm and it looks so good now!
