Default Should I hear the fuel pump?

I just acquired a B4 after running B3s for 3 years or so now.
The B4 won't start. I'm charging the battery now as the prev owner ran it dead, gave up and dealt the car to me.
So the B4 has the fuel pump in the tank, right? My question is, should I be able to hear it running when I turn the key on, or do I have to stick my head under the back of the car and really listen?

Both of my B3's fuel pumps can be heard in the next county, ya know?

Thanks
Dave

Default When you turn the key you should hear a slight buzz coming from the fuel tank area...

In the B4 it won't be as loud as the B3 but you should still be able to hear it.

Default B4's with good pumps can be next to impossible to hear even from the trunk...

with your head over the fuel tank access cover. Also the new Bosch fuel pump bodies are a high density thick-walled plastic whereas the originals were very thin aluminum walls so the newer style Bosch fuel pumps (manufactured in the last 5-6 years) are inherently quieter.

Default Releay clicks but I can't hear the pump...

Even through the filler pipe. Guess I'll crack a fitting and I'll know for sure if its making and pressure then.

Thanks - all.

Default pull the clip out out of the fpr if the fpr pushes out at that point the fuel pump is...

working/making pressure. But wrap that area with towels to absorb about 4 tblspns of fuel.

If there's no fuel under the fpr fuel pump is dead.

Its snowing in western PA in the end of March. What's up with that?

Thanks for the feedback.
