Default sound options on a CQ

I know this topic has probably been beaten to death, but id like to make an upgrade. What is the best VALUE, getting a sub and amp and going that route, or get some quality component speakers? My moms subaru has nice bose component system and it sounds awsome! do you really need all the high end sub to get a nice bass sound in the CQ?

I installed a pair of component speakers in my CQ; 6"? in the rear panels and tweeters at the top of the B-pillars. I also have 2 12s in the truck which is way overkill. I would think a light duty sub with a single 10" would sound nice.

You don't even need a 10" in the CQ. I run a single Kicker Comp 8" in a band-pass box, with a low-pass filtered amp, running 70-100w RMS. The single 8" in that setup is more than enough to shake the rear view mirror.

The amp cost me ~$150 (amp has a built in active cross-over, you can set it to HP, LP, or no filter, and you can set the cutoff frequencies for the high and low filters), sub and box was free (sweet ****!) but would cost around $110 to duplicate. Run some nice shielded RCA's and heavier gauge wire to the amp and use the power antenna lead on the deck to turn it on and off, and you are set.

People get bass (sub) crazy, and the music looses the balance it once had

I used to resemble that remark ;-)

Had a single Solobaric 12 running around 300w RMS in a proper box for the Solo. It made the rear view, and side mirrors, completely useless. It hit hard, and went low... Great sub, IMO. Very small footprint for a 12" too.

The 5kq is gonna end up with a very nice sound system. 3.5" two way coax's (saves space) up front in the dash, 6.5" Comps (old school!) in custom boxes in the rear deck, may toss in another set of 3.5" two-ways in the deck too to add in upper range for the rear passengers. Single 8" mounted where the ski sack goes (its removeable, and I can make a "quick release" for the sub if I want). I only have two amps right now, but I figure with two sets of pre-amp outs, and 4 channels powered by the deck I'll be ok for now. May get a portable MP3 player, as the deck also has an Aux. input. It'll also control a cd-changer, but not the one I have, which is why I may sell my Clarion changer.

The CQ will have either two 3.5 coax's and a simple deck, or nothing but the engine noise, as a sound system. Going lightweight with it...

Howdy! I'll tell ya, my buddy has two 15" DHD comp subs in his 80q, otherwise known as the NO trunk 80q or the loud busted one Eurolight monster It's really amusing to listen to music in that car then get into my 90. The largest speaker I run is 6.5", though there are 4 of them and two up front. The quality and clarity is so much better, but I kind of miss the obnoxious car rattling bass, though about 2 minutes into a song in my 90 I get over it

Cheers,

Default Best Bang for the buck is to replace the stock speakers.

I put infinity 3.5" and 6" (I think) in the stock locations. Less than $150, they sound great. I also got an Alpine MP3 deck and installed a 10" sub & amplifier. This took the total cost up to $1300 with installation.

I was shocked at how cheap quality speakers are.

Default Quality = components, Boom boom = sub

go for broke and invest in really nice component speakers. A/D/S, Orion, Infinity, Alpine R's (may be difficult to fit!!), and Rockford are some of the higher-end brands to choose from (in N.A. that is...) I currently have A/D/S 4" comps upfront, and have yet to change-out the stock rear speakers. But when I do it will be for A/D/S 5.25" comps. In my mind A/D/S is the BEST on the market, however some may argue that, however you pay for their quality.

If you really want to go all out, get all components AND THEN buy a 4-channel amp and run the speakers with those instead of the head unit. Now yer talkin' serious audio equipment and sound!
