sounds like tire noise, but could be wheel bearing?
I thought it was the crappy A509s, but it was the same noise with the winters on. Consistent noise above 40kmph. Sounds like it's in my head, but I think it's the drivers side sending vibrations up the front pillar to my ear!
I just want to rule out the idea of 'transmissions bearings'....I seem to remember reading something here late last year...'howling transmission bearings', but I could be imagining things.
With wheel bearings, I'm more used to the drive-turn-left-turn-right-hear-noise-?, diagnosing of them... ...but my noise is consistent forward, left, right, whatever... ...not so much a grinding, but a consistent hum.

howling transmission bearings
That was me, and I've still got them (though I'm not sure it's bearings). My car is a '95 though, so it is a different gearbox. I started thinking it was road noise as well. It started as a faint whine, speed dependent when I was coasting in gear, independent of steering direction. It's gotten progressively worse over the past 18 month (22k miles), but isn't present when I am on the gas. I have a spare gearbox waiting to go in, but it ain't broke, so I ain't fixing it.
Diagnosing the gearbox over the wheel bearings was easy. My car is a quattro, so I jacked the left side up and got the wheels spinning. The noise was present, and remained present after the rear wheels coasted to a stop and the fronts were still spinning. That allowed me to eliminate the rear diff, hanger bearing and torsen output shaft. I did the same with the right side and had the same symtoms, so I knew it wasn't any of the wheel beaings or differential output bearings: it has to be something related to the input side of the front differential.

my 1994 FWD 90 also has a howling noise when coasting
It doesn't happen when I accelerate, and it goes away the second that I step on the clutch. Did you guys notice it going away as soon as you step on the clutch also?
What do you guys think definitely a "howling transmission bearing"? Has anyone done this repair or paid someone, if so how much labor is involved?
