Default $.02...

I have done quite a bit with audio and stuff over the past 6 years, so here's what I think.... in a nutshell, you get what you pay for. Want some speakers that are loud across all dynamics? JL Audio. want a good set of any manufacturer? Get that manufacturer's component set. I personally do recommend Infinitys, but they need to be augmented with at least a 10" sub... that's my next project. IMHO, to do a decent audio job, you will need the following:
3 relays
2 Amps
4 gauge power wires
the thickest speaker wires you can find
all appropriate connectors
2 sets of speakers
1 sub w/box (bandpass pref., #2 would be sealed)
If you are picky about sound quality, get a new head unit- pioneer makes a decent one, but make sure you get one with no extra moving parts, but one which does have a seperate sub level control.
I usually replace all the speakers because 10-year-old speakers are probably on the verge of falling apart, and I don't want to rip my car apart again a month later after my cones disintegrate. Amp everything seperately for signal clarity. reason? when you buy a head unit, it has a built-in amp, but that amp will be of much lesser quality than a dedicated amp. Make sure you get 4v pre-outs. So, to clarify, the normal speakers get an amp, which should be a seperate amp from the one you use for your subs. Make sure you install bass blockers on the speakers and enable or install an LPF for the subs. Crutchfield has a lot of good info on this, and the customer support is top-notch. The relays are important because they protect your circuits/fuses/equipment and enable a greater draw with less strain. For the power wires to the amps, use a home-run (direct from battery to amp, fused about 6-12" from the battery). Of you have any questions I might be able to help with, email me! dspahn@cuh2a.com

Relays- one for the remote line of course (I'm not sure of the current draw per unit, but you have at least one antenna, a head unit, and two amps) , one for the switched power to the HU, and one for the constant power to the HU. There might be an excess of capacity, but I tend to play it safe- that's why you see so many posts for a heater core replacement I haven't even started yet!
