I searched the archives and I think I know where to begin, but I have a few questions (and maybe a favor!) to ask...
Miktip,
Do you still have the pic of where the speed sensor is located on a 5 sp tranny from this post?
https://forums.audiworld.com/9080/msgs/53024.phtml
Does anyone have a pic of the backside of the instrument cluster to give me an idea of where to look for broken solders?
Finally, does anyone here in VT have a VAG-Com I could diagnose the CEL with? In exchange for your choice of beverage or other recreational mind-altering substance??
I'm going to be pulling my cluster soon to install some gauge rings, so I might as well try to fix this and the outside temp display light while I'm at it.
Thanks in advance everyone!
Brian

Based on what I found in the archives, seems like a common problem. I didn't notice if the odometer continued working while the speedo was dead, but I suspect it didn't.
Thanks for the pic!

the code will be something like "intermittent signal from speed sensor"
It's not the speed sensor - at least mine wasn't. If you have a spare one, try it, it only takes a few minutes to replace. But if you have to buy one, don't.
Since the car is in Boston and I am in CT, I have not had a chance to spend any quality time with the car. I have tried some stabilant 22 on the connections on the back of the cluster.
This problem only crops up every month or so, then disappears, but it is annoying and frightening. Please post your findings. TIA.

even after replacing speed sensor.. slap the right side of the dash/cluster - not on top or dead center - but a little towards the right where it curves down. Don't salp it too hard and only do it when it flakes out..
So far mine hasn't died in a while now..knock on wood..
