Default Starter not responding... read on..

Just recently, the starting system on my '88 90q (5 cyl.) has been buggy. I've never experienced any strange noises out of the starter.... but today, when you turn the key to 'start', nothing happens.... no draw on the battery, no ticking of the starter solenoid, no dimming of lights. Seems to take several repeats of turning off the ignition and trying again to start before it kicks in.... immediately fires to life when it does start.

A browse through the search came up with some sort of wire link on the starter housing that can eventually fail due to exposure to the elements.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions for this? It's -10 and snowing.... and my tools and a warm shop are 2 hours away

Maybe corrosion on the lead wire to the starter?

Default I'd start with the ignition switch.

The corroded wire is usually an "all or nothing" situation.
