Default Starter may be toast, or stuck. Try....

Try smacking the starter housing with a hammer.... just incase it has jammed. The 4-cyl starter is different from the 5-cyl, but I can tell you that the 5-cyl starter has a weak point. It is based on a planetary gear system. The outer ring is plastic, and can fail without notice. I had my starter rebuilt (in an effort to fix a no-start problem... turned out to be the ign. switch), and a month after it was back on the road, that outer gear failed. It had been really freakin cold here, and I was home for the weekend (car parked in the semi-warm garage.... right at freezing rather than -25c), ran out that morning, came back, parked all afternoon, went to leave for a rally and *tick*.... nothing.... couldn't get anything out of it.... Had the car up, dropped the skidplate, and removed the starter in less than 10 minutes....

....Found this:

$10 part, stopped the starter from turning over.... I missed a winter drivex rally because of that!

Default Oh, Your story reminds mine so much! Temperature is Neg. in F

Garage not heated. 5 month old starter rebuilt by American rebuilder quits. Tow start by friend's car, and off to German supplier for starter rebuilt in Germany by Bosch (still kicking after 1.5 years, knock on wood). Upon removal starter had loose parts inside. At least i got a refund. The original starter actually never died, but I replaced it because it screeched loudly-little brass ring was toast.
Lesson: buy electric parts rebuilt in germany for german cars.

FWD had the 3A 2L 4-cyl engine as an option.
