starting problem...
recently, my car has been very difficult to start on the first try. i let it crank and crank for about 3-4 seconds and nothing. sometimes it sputters and sounds like it might start but then dies. but then it lights right up on the second try. it doesn't seem to matter if the engine is warm or cold. any ideas???
thanks.
thanks.

Re: vacuum leak
My '91 90 - purhcased used - amazed me from the beginning because it's basically a hard-starting bitch. Had read before that fuel injectors were the problem. Just now though, reading at www.20v.org, under the fixit section, it appears that fuel line connections go bad. Fuel pump has to repressurize system when starting, causing harder starting....anyway, until I investigate further, I just crank it a couple seconds and retry. Like your's, it then starts right up.

..mind!!
Fuel pump check valve!! In most Audi's these are part of the fuel pump and can only be fixed by replacing the ENTIRE fuel pump.
A good test is to "prime" the pump before starting. Turn the key to the ON position but NOT to the point where the starter turns over. This will activate the fuel pump and presserize the line. Leave in the ON posistion for just a few seconds (until you hear the fuel pump shut off). Do this two or three times and then try to start the car.
NOTE: You must flip the key all the way to the OFF position in between each "prime".
Did the car start easier after being "primed"??
