Default Starting Problem.

OK guys... went to start the 80Q today. Its been a cold winter here and Cleveland and a few times its taken a longer time than normal to start the beast up. (after about 8-10 seconds of cranking) Thats on really cold days. Other than that she's fine. The starter was replaced with a factory reman. from Bosch 13 months ago. This morning however is another cold day and won't start at all. I actually got a noise (after about 7-8 seconds of cranking) of something that disengaged and spun to a stop. I was thinking solenoid maybe? I'm wondering if I should let it sit till it warms up this afternoon and then try again. I don't want to kill the battery just yet. What are your thoughts fellas......

what oil are you running. Higher wt oil can be a load on the starter when cold.

Default It really seems like you have a starter issue.

either solenoid or the starter itself.

BTW - clattering lifters are caused by two thiings - wear - or varnish build up. I suspect varnish build up. Try adding a can of oil detergent and running it for 500 miles. (but that does not address your issue at hand) I run 0-40 wt in the 95 Audi 90 (my daughters)

What oil detergent do you use? I'm thinking its wear. It has about 250k on her and the clacking is intermittent. It gets loud when the oil drops a tad and at startup. But after it warms up it becomes very sporadic. I'd still like to use the oil detergent.

Default I got it started but.....

I let the car sit til it warmed up outside. It was 11 degrees out last night. Then I waited til it was about 32 degrees this morning and saw some snow melt so I figured it should be warm enough. It started right up. The question still lingers about the spinning starter on a year old factory reman. starter. What do you guys think?

Default I just go to the autoparts stores and read the labels and pick one

I do try not to run the car hard when I am using it. It has worked on past cars very well. Quieted lifters for me.

Also, I have use BG BK44 in my A4 and my daughters 90 and have seem improvements in the idle and acceleration. This is not cheap (~$20/can)
