Default My faulty question; & my "two dimes & one pennies" worth...

I doubt you where able to turn the springs w/weight on wheels. I should have asked:

-Your cupped-washer photos are all w/weight on wheels, correct?

-You said you where able to turn the springs. Was that while they where installed on the struts, but otherwise un-weighted, correct?

-Your springs have not been cut after purchase, correct? &

-Your strut-mounts are new & have zero time on them, correct?

Back to spring movement for a moment; was it a front strut that you where able to move the spring on? If you don't remember please go check. Is it possible that you may have swapped the front pair of upper perches w/the rears on re-assembly?

If your springs are loose in between the perches, they are really going to hammer on your strut-mounts.

I may have a set of possibly the identical B&G drop springs as you, & although they are quite short, IIRC they did not turn once installed on the struts. I do remember how stiff these rode & although it didn't take a lot of compression to remove them, they where not loose between the perches.

IMHO, perhaps the reason your mechanic says your washer-height looks normal is that most of the cars he sees -need- new strut-mounts. You will find what "normal" -is- for your car in the link below. Unfortunately you won't find out how good -normal- feels to drive, until you fix this.

I wouldn't go on about this & risk me becoming annoying (imagine!), except for the fact that I think your observation & concern around this gap is justified; & when you fix this (& I would stroungly recommend that you do); that you will be amazed at how much more secure the car feels primarily through the steering (this is with "Pro-Mounts" up front & "Mount-Savers" all round), during cornering & transient (slalom or lane-change type) manoeuvres.

As far as fixing it (for good, because if your assembly is correct, your mounts (IMHO only) are toast) goes, go here:

http://www.vintageaudiperformance.com/

and at least get some new Sach/Boge OEM strut-mounts to go w/the bespoke "Mount-Savers"; however, because the driving/steering "feel" of the "Pro-Mounts was so much better than brand new OEM mounts alone, for only slightly more, I do think the best cost/benefit combo is a pair of "Pro-Mounts" w/the req'd "Mount-Savers" up front; & "Mount-Savers" alone out back.

The trouble with normal, is; it always gets worse...
