from VW vortex (posted a link in InfernoCL's post, but I thought I'd share it with you all)
In brief: Yes, it is possible for your car to be "too low", and having it "too low" will actually hurt your handling ability, not improve it.(applies to all VAG, and really all cars...including the Mustang above)
...and goes into looks vs. performance, yadda, yadda, yadda...
enjoy!
(yeah, this is what happens when the AudiWorld forum goes down. guilty!)<ul><li><a href="http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=621342">Read before lowering your car</a></li></ul>

and the truth is, all the suspension points have probably been moved up, and there not one oem stock suspension part in those cars

what ride height is best for the stock pickup points, tie rods, and ball joints? If I am installing coilovers might as well get it right this time and lwoer the car appropriately to match the spring rates, sway bars, and weight of the vehicle. Damn my mathematical skill just isn't up to that level, anyone?

I am interested in getting the car on corner scales after I pick a slightly lowered ride height, it's really the only way to get the car to handle 100% the same in each direction. Measuring from the bottom of top spring perch to the lower perch top seems to be the best way to get everything even, but then again there is always manufacturing tolerances and that like. I'd be interested to corner scale the car before the coilovers and then get it balanced with the coilovers on.
I would not do it with the fender arch, body work is not a good way to lower. Really it should be done around the suspension, the body has loads of variance in it.
Cheers,

and the rest of the car as you would on a daily basis, but if you are going to auto-x or track it then do it empty with half tank of gas and you in the driver's seat or an equivalent weight. I've heard of folks aligning cars with sacks of sand in the driver's seat to simulate weight, not a bad idea!
