Yeah I do really think so. They would look "SICK!" as in I would throw up....
It's a gimmick styling elememt that will come and go out of style with time, just like chrome comes and goes with time. Chrome was big in the 50s, then it slowly dwindled until it was not to be seen in the 80s and 90s, now it's making a comeback (have you driven a Ford...lately?)
Even now, though, when these metal mirrors are supposedly in style I think they're ugly. Same goes for windshield frames on cabrios. We have the technology to paint these parts to match the rest of the car, why are we making it mismatched? If I want a metal side mirror I'll buy a 60s-era 911 or something, because it fits with the styling of that time period. Tacking metal elements on a 90s car devoid of any metal-ish things except the badges seems to me no different than sticking on some chrome wheel covers from Wal-Mart or Autozone. Maybe the ones with the "cross-drilled brake discs" molded in for 20 extra hp! In fact I think it would look even worse on a dark car, because it would stick out more in a "find 5 things that don't belong in this picture" kind of way. Maybe you could get away with it on a silver or pearl car, but I'd still probably gag.
Obviously this is personal opinion and pointless to discuss, you should definitely do whatever makes you smile when you look at your car.
