I'm in the market for winter tires and I'm thinking Nokian RSi or WR look really appealing. Are there any other tires out there that you'd recommend?

Hands down the Hankook Winter iPikes! They're inexpensive and hold up to abuse! check 'em out! And they can be studded if you want that extra traction.

Go with the Hakka RSI. I have them and the traction is unreal, also the WR is not a true winter tire it is what nokian calls an all weather tire. Their way of saying all season.

This symbol (see below) says otherwise.

Don't dismiss them as not winter tires just because Nokian calls them "all weather". Often (IMHO), the most demanding winter conditions are; variable conditions.
Nokian sells summer tires (go look), this isn't one of them. Nokian Tyres is the northernmost tire manufacturer in the world (locate Finland on a map, note how the Arctic Circle runs through it). They've produced winter tyres for more than 70 years.
Nokian lists it as a winter tire. The three seasons it is -most- recommended for are fall, winter and spring. Below 10 degrees C, most all-seasons are too hard to function well. Not the WR. That is the difference. Porsche recommends this particular tire as a winter tire. Also IMHO, now that I have these, it's for summer heat that I now have a dedicated set of summer tires.
Considering that every tire is a compromise, and that my winter is comprised of winter conditions also during both spring & fall, I'm very happy with these.
There's even a Canadian connection, as they're made with canola oil!

Before last winter I put on a set of General Altimax Arctics. They're cheap and made in Germany. I've been more than happy with them. Take a look at the customer reviews on Tirerack.

Just put on a brand new set of Continental ContiWinterContact TS810 91H's, and I must say I am more than satisfied with performance, without my ABS. 600$ well invested.
