Default timing belt covers.....ok without?

my timing belt covers are less than stellar (missing screw holes, cracks, chunks missing etc)

i also see lots of engines without the cover.....is it really that important to have?

i assume if a pebble or something gets in there im forked, so should i just look for a new one?
