Default Timing belt problem..lead to overheating!

Hello, I got a little problem with my car..wonder if you guys can help me out..I just got my thermostat replaced last week (by independent mechanic)....but he misplaced the timing belt tooth when he put the belt back...now I has the problem with overheating..the fan won't turn on until the heating gauge almost reach to the highest point..also the power steering got burn when the engine get too hot (overheat)..car still run and drive as normal..but as stop and go traffic..it will get hot very fast..but will cool down when I got to the freeway..so my question is..can the timing belt able to be reset to it current condition? would this damaged the engine if I keep driving in this condition (if I can keep the car from overheating)? if I turn the a/c on to keep the fan running..would this help to cool down the engine? also is it easy to correct the timing problem by DIY? need your advise..thanks

Your mechanic had to take the radiator fans out to replace the TB. He most likely hooked them up in reverse when he went to screw the fan wires onto their posts.

I'm not convinced that he did anything wrong with the timing belt. If the timing belt was off you'd have bent valves, not a hot engine.

Reverse them! Should be an easy fix! Make them look like this!

Sounds like he also might not have bled the coolant system... and that is another issue. I'd take it back to him and have him make it right.

what about the loose timing belt tooth? is it have anything to do with the cooling system?because the fan won't kick in until the temp. gauge almost reach the highest point...or if the timing belt tooth off track...can the car still be driveable like mine right now?....I am a little confused...some mechanic expert told me that the mechanic guy that worked on my car put the timing belt in a little off from it track that cause the heating fan problem...I took his word for it..but I don't know if he's right or the mechanic guy that worked on my car is messing up..thanks

Default If the timing belt was off a tooth the car wouldn't run right (if at all without making a lot of...

...bad noise). I don't see why it would cause the car to overheat unless it was tensioned too tight causing premature wear on your water pump. Sensors tell the car when to kick the fans on and off. Also as mentioned, air bubbles in the cooling system can lead to over heating. Bleed the system and check the polarity of the fan wiring.

Default If the timing belt was slightly off, the car wouldn't run as smoothly as you say it is.

It certainly isn't the cause of the overheating. Your fan is coming on too late. If you say the fan comes on but not until very late, that's a good indication that the cooling system needs to be properly bled as there is air in the system. Temperature sensors will not function properly when there is air present.
