By chance, do you have the Bentley Manual?

Yep, that's exactly my setup, AFC engine.
I have the Bentley CD and had that same shot out in the garage with me...for two weekends now![Frown](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
I took off everything in that picture and the oil pump shown in 17-321.
I followed the instructions to remove both pans in order to remove the pump so I could get at the crank seal and replace the oil pump gasket...had about a half inch of grease build up on the front lip of the upper pan.
I'm almost positive I followed the re-install directions, lined up the pump to match the notches on the crankshaft...is it possible I didn't line it up correctly?
Thanks!

somethings not quite right in the oil system.
Maybe a clog? A valve stuck open?
Could be the oil pump? The oil pick-up assembly?
The oil cooler? Something in the pan?
You might have to retrace your steps, and see if you can figure it out?

See if you can narrrow the sound down to a certain location in the engine. You can even try using a really long screwdriver, place it on the engine in various postions and put your ear on the end of it and it would work as a stethascope (or however you spell that).
Does the sound seem to be comming from up top in the head/cam area or down low like a rod bearing or main bearing knock?
Was the sound there before the work was done?

The noise is coming from the top of the engine, I went underneath to feel the oil pan and it was cold and quiet down there.
Loudest point was when I listened directly on top of the intake manifold when I could hear both valve banks in stereo.
I'll see if I can find some way to inject oil into the pump...does anyone know if it is possible to prime to pump by filling some oil in through the pump locking bolt hole?
I'm at work now so can't go look.
The car is still sitting with the front wheels on ramps...possibly keeping the oil in the back of the pan and out of reach of the pump?

Okay, not the best news, but I'd much rather rework the lower section than possibly have to do a valve replacement.
As posted in response to Bryans12V, I'll see if I can find anything in Bentley or the forum here on priming the oil pump and if no luck there, remove the pump again and see if I can prime it while it's out and quickly reassemble to the point that I can start it up.
Thanks for spending so much time on this one, I really appreciate it!

Again much appreciation to Miktip for hanging in there with me on this one and the good advice.
Following the 12v discussion suggestions, I overfilled the oil with 4 quarts and started up the engine.
The oil pressure light went off in about 10 seconds, the nasty clacking noise went away after about a minute, and now it's just the lifter clicking. I shut it off after that to bleed out some oil and hopefully with a little driving the lifter clicks will go back to the "normal" noise level.
Over the last two weekends I must have taken off the timing belt 5 times so if anyone is in the No. California area with a 12v and needs help with theirs, drop me a line. I have the special tools and experience with it now and be more than happy to return a little AW karma.
Thanks again!
