.. how long can it take huh? (3 hours for me)
got a $150 Blau off ebay last week though it was for a v8 and something else, but looked identical to the cabrios from what I could see. Turns out the only difference is a slight one with two small electrical connectors.... easily made to fit.
All I'm missing now is the rubber gromet for the fender which has been inprovised for the moment since the original has almost crumbled to pieces.
I thought I could see a (part?) # on this of 893035539 but would expect it to be unobtainium.
Of course I had it all put together then thought hey, it must go up more than one foot right?... Take it all apart again only to learn that due to the inner diameter of the nut on top, that is indeed as far as it could possibly go. hmmf.
Put it all together again and it goes up and down and has reception.
I disected the old one and the problem as I see it with this design is that its a metal gear that turns a blackish plastic gear inside. Over time the metal chews up the plastic until eventually it just spins and has no drive:/

Is about one foot really the correct extended antenna height?
and
I haven't pulled the gamma head yet, but the rear speakers do not work. Are there indeed rear speakers? I know the audi gods have sometimes installed grills but no speakers.
This is a new to me 94 cab that I'm working though its issues.

I replaced mine with a hirschmann antenna that extends to about 3 feet.. When the hood is down and the stereo on, it makes loads more wind noise than your smaller 1 footer..
