Default Trying to hammer the CV joint on...

How do I know when its on- does the circlip loudly click or what? Also, should I just put the boot on to hold the joint straight while I hammer it, or will this cause problems? thank yoU!

Default Make sure you put the nut on the joint before hammering so that you don't damage the threads.

The ring makes not click that I've ever heard. Usually the hammer makes a different sound when the joint seats (clink, clink, clunk, sort of).

Try to pull the joint off by hand. Pull hard - if it comes off, it wasn't on all the way.

The boot can help to hold to straight, but don't put the clamp on until you are sure the joint is seated. You may find that the boot "blows up" air as you hammer the joint on. You will want to let the air out before clamping.
