Default a turning clunk

wicked snow storm today and then i hear it....when i turned left i could hear a clunking coming from my right side. shock mount, broken shock, ball joint?
i was thinking of replacing my ball joints, they have about 60k on them and roads here in nny are killer so i call the audi shop and the mech tells me on the 94q its all one piece and that the whole control arm needs to be replaced. say what? i can clearly see both in the bentley and online you can buy the ball joint seperately, its just a 3 bolt. apparently this guy doesnt know what he is talking about.
give me some feedback on this if you could.

Default He doesn't know what he is talking about..

it actually sounds like a CV joint. If its clicking lightly just replace the CV joint if its really loud then you should replace the drive shaft. Also when looking to see if you ball joint, tie rods, or control arms are bad check to see if the rubber boot is busted and also if you really want to take a good look take it off and see how free the pivot is with the bolt that sticks out of the boot. Normaly if the boot isn't busted then its not warn out however with bad roads it could easily get messed up without a busted boot also at 60k these things are kind of good to replace, even though most of them say they are for the life of the car.

Default Could just be the spring

I've had a similar clunk on my '95 for quite some time. Replaced the bushings, steering rack, tie rods and shock bearings and it still clunking. Finally determined that the spring was binding on the perch and then clunking when it let go. My mechanic suggests removing the spring and greasing the perch but that is supposed to only last 1-2 years so I've decided to just live with it.

Not to say that you can't also have problems with the other items too so check them out but most likely it's nothing.
