Yesterday I was driving along in my 93 90S and I heard a really loud, high-pitched sort of squealing noise. When I stopped in the parking lot I opened my door and could still hear it and there was a weird smell. When I came back to my car later on there was fluid on the ground between the 2 front tires. I looked at the engine and the coolant resevoir was almost empty. What could this be? Water pump was my first thought. Please help me

Since the WP utilizes the timing belt to drive it, good chance its damaged the timing belt!
Good time to change timing belt too!

Well we ran the car for 15 minutes and the sound didn't come back. Nothing leaked out the bottom and there was a lot of built up pressure when we stopped it and opened the coolant resevoir. No idea. You?
Thanks,
Ben

What should I look for when lloking at the pump? I already checked out the timing belt when we replaced the serpentine belt, and it looked pretty new. Thanks

Wanna' know why I splashed out on ported/polished heads with new valves, seals and all?
Had the exact same thing happen to me one night two years ago, started with a squealing sound and then burning - burning rubber! going up hill behind slow queue of traffic and suddenly . . silence!
The engine cut-out without a sound.
Didn't know what it was, my Audi knowledge then was non existant. Called the AA and the guy delved straight under the cambelt cover and told me the bad news that the cambelt had slipped.
Got a compression check done and no compression evident!
To cut a long story short what had happened was the cam belt tensioner had seized stripped the cambelt and mauled the waterpump.
I was lucky not to lose the entire engine, every valve was bent but the pistons were okay. The valves due to their odd looking shape now reside in a tuners "hall of fame" cabinet!
Turns out one of the head gaskets was close to failing too.
I learnt the hard way, just wish I had stubbled upon this forum sooner.
