Default Valve guides and stem seals: a DIY job?

This weekend I'll be installing the RS2 goodies and I'd like to do the lifters, valve guides and seals while I've got everything apart. I haven't looked at the bentley yet, but is this a DIY job? Any special tools required? Does the head need to come off?

Default yes and no...

The seals and lifters are not a huge problem with the head on... you'll have to put compressed air in the cyl @ tdc when removing the keepers for those 4 valves. Because the stem seals are under the spring the springs must be removed, thus the need to keep the valves stuck to the head with compressed air. The guides must be done with the head off... no way around that. Also they are usually done by a machine shop because they are pressed in, I think.

Lifters are easier than the seals, however it still requires removing the cams.

yes.

DIY?

If you have the tools.

IMO, Better to do with the head off the car.

Valve keepers need to be removed. Special tool needed.

Valve guides require a hydraulic press, and a reamer.

Often, with new guides, the valves are given a valve job.

Default Looks like a job above my qualifications

I'll remove the head and likely take it to a shop. Any idea what I should expect to pay in labour? I have all of the parts.

Default Hmm. Just got a price of $500

Audi/VW head rebuild specialists. I'm supplying parts. He will install new stem seals, guides and lifters, regrind valves and machine deck. Sounds pricey to me.
