Default valve seals

I have to take the valve cover off to replace the valve cover gasket of my 20v, thought I may replace the valve seals while I'm at it. Consulted the Bentley, discovered the recommended usage of a number of special VAG tools for the job... Not having these tools, I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for doing it sans special tools, or if anyone in the Baltimore area had some tools they wouldn't mind lending out.

Default Impossible without....

the special tools.

Requires both cams to be removed, and often requires the head to come off the engine....

https://forums.audiworld.com/9080/msgs/192813.phtml</a

Default You "might" be able to do it whit the head on

In either case you at least need the spring compressor. If the valves are sealing well and you can build up good compression in the cylinder then if you're lucky you can do it while on the car. You may end up pushing a vlave down, and then the game is over and the head must come off.

It's much easier with the head on the bench.

Default Use rope instead of compressed air.

crank piston down, run a few feet on soft nylon rope into the spark plug hole, crank piston back up tight. Don't forget to remove the rope when done!

Default I prefer the "head-on-bench" method...

Allows close inspection of valves, guides, etc... ;O)
