On a B4 like Mike Tipton's car, the temperature is displayed on the instrument cluster as his photo has illustrated. The said temp display is on all the time.
Your typ-89 has an ancient climate control head sourced from General Motors. The temp display on your climate control head only works after you press a button.

Am I the only one that's that's thought about...
...moving the sensor to have an intake air temp reading instead of outside air temp.? I think about it every time I'm sitting in traffic and the stupid temp reading starts to climb...
