I have heard conflicting advice on this, and the good old Bentley is silent on it... Is there any sealant used when installing the water pump gasket? some sources say to use permatex Blue RTV, and some say to use Vaseline, and others say use nothing... btw, my car is a 93 90S V6 auto.
Thanks!
Thanks!

If you have a gasket, what do you need sealant for? I have been told by numerous Audi mechanics that should not use any sealant at all. It messes with the pump ability to circulate the water. As we all know, european cars already have poor coolant circulation. Vasoline is a petrol based product and all it heats up it will probably start to disolve your gasket.

desirable - on the 3a 4-cyl engine there is a flange which bolts on to the flywheel end for a water hose. It has a square profile rubber gasket seated slightly proud in a channel on the flange. Over time, the mating face on the head tends to become pitted and a skim of sealant which fills the pits is standard practice before refitting the flange to stop seepage. As ever, YMMV and sealant is no real substitute for a gasket. I can't remember what it was that was used but it wasn't the standard blue sump gasket goo
