WAYYYYY OT, but can PC3200 memory be used in a PC2100 motherboard? I know there's a bunch of...

...techies here (like myself), but I honestly can't find a answer anywhere saying yay or nay...

Much in the same manner that PC133 doesn't always work in PC100 or PC66 boards. Comes down to cas latency, voltage, ECC or non-ECC, etc.
I'm running DDR400 with a 333MHz chip, but my board is pretty smart (I've even clocked it down to 133/266MHz and beyond the recommended bus speed).

What i'm looking at is...
512MB DDR PC3200/2-2-2-6/UNBUFFERED/NON-ECC/DDR400/2.8V/64Meg x 64
The only difference is the CAS and the voltage...
so is 2-2-2-6 faster than 2.5? Is 2.8V too much draw on a PC2100 motherboard which is meant for 2.5V?

ram will only be powered by 2.5V. Current (amperage) will change with load (ie component draw).
I believe that the 2-2-2-6 is the dram timing, not the cas latency (well, sort of). Other than the voltage, it looks like the newer ram will work (but as snowman said, only at the DDR266/PC2100 performance level). Not sure if the 3200 will like only having 2.5V supplied or not...

"DDR memory was designed to be backward compatible so generally speaking, you can safely add faster memory to your computer. For example, you can install a PC2700 DDR module in a computer that calls for PC2100 DDR. However, keep in mind that faster memory will not necessarily make your system faster. You can't speed up your computer by adding faster memory if other components in your computer (your processor or other memory modules) operate at a slower speed."
If it doesn't work, then it'll be an excuse to get the faster board/chip sooner...I just don't want to buy PC2100 when I don't plan on keeping a PC2100 computer for very long. Since the prices of the 800MHz boards/chips has come down I would like to upgrade in the near future.
Thanks to both of you for your help!!

...is a eMachine I recently "acquired" (2GHz Celeron)...I'm planning up upgrading my machine to a Asus P4P800-VM with some sort of 800MHz chip.
I want to buy memory that I can use with the Asus board once I buy it...so I want to see if that'll work with the PC2100 board in the eMachine. If it won't work, I won't bother...but I can see a difference in speed from a 2G Celeron to the 933 PIII I have...
