I've kinda been in the same boat. The company I was working for got bought out. I lost my position in the company and I've basically started a new job with a new company-and that was not by my choice. I am leaving the new company because basically they are idiots.

well, being in software and making big investments used to be ok, but no more
I used to think I would be able to retire (at all), but if I stay in s/w then I fully expect to have to work until death.
