My first teenager will be learning to drive starting in March. Am considering the Audi 80 or 90 ('91 or earlier), 200 Turbo, V8. Desired features include safety, front or all wheel drive (we are in Colorado), automatic, would like to spend $3-$4K.
Any thoughts or recommendations. I would also consider Saabs or Volvos, but I don't know anything about them.
Thanks in advance.

All Audi cars are either front or quattro drive. Before 1990 all quattro cars were standard not automatics. In 1990 when the V8 quattro was introduced that changed. The V8 is a very big car that was very exspensive new. They can be had very cheaply considering the car you are getting. The only problem is the parts are rediculosly exspensive. (I saw a timeing belt advertised for (parts only) $750)
The best Thing I think to do is get a 80/90 quattro with a standard trans.

i'd probably go with a 90 or 91 FWD 90 w/auto. a 4cyl will be the easiest on the pocket book in all aspects. the FWD turbo/auto will only get your teen into much bigger trouble. the V8 is slightly bigger and a fair amount heavier than even a '91 200q, and repairs are not cheap. imo, too much car for a new/inexperienced driver.
heck, my first "car" was a '81 VW rabbit pickup, then a (shared) '88 90 4cyl fwd auto. then i bought an '87 5kq, then picked up my CQ, and sold the fwd auto '87 5k we had at that point. definately go with the '88-91 FWD 80/90 auto.

Recently attending a seminar by a private driving program called "Master Drive." A couple of interesting recommendations were counter to my opinions and conventional wisdom.
One of which was "More power is safer therefore better for a new driver." (Sounds like an Audi enthusiast.) They are of course assuming that the teen will behave themselves.

Make your kid drive to school in an auto every day (if you have one) for like a month or two. I did this then bought my 90, which is 5spd. Driving stick is so much more fun, and if properly done, I think its easier than an auto.
