I actually took the time to strip off all of the stainless plating.
Looks like this:

w/out any plating.
I then masked off everything except the now-exposed plastic so I could paint it. I used two or three coats of primer, and probably 6 coats of gloss black, with very short time duration between. It gave a textured, but shiny, finish.
