Default I had a 2.0l 80 with a whining pump...

...for two years, it whined when I bought it and it whined when I sold it two years later. Mind you, the 2.0l 80 before that one whined when I bought it and failed within one week! (The previous owner offered to pay half tho!!)

VolkswagenAudiCar magazine in the UK did a report on buying a 1990 UK spec 2.0l 80 Sport and commented that "these cars have noisy fuel pumps, it does not mean it is going to fail, they're just noisy"

So, it could go tomorrow, or it could last for years!

Probably doesn't help you much - sorry

Default Not necessarily, mine does it since i bought it.

I was told it's normal, and I've heard it in every other Audi 80/90/coupe I've ridden in. But if it starts gettin louder then you might have a problem... My solution: I just turn up the stereo ;-)

Default Mine does the same, I keep a spare in the trunk !!

I'd say hunt around till you can find one cheap. As long as yours still works, you wont be forced into buying one in a hurry at a high price.

Replacement is pretty easy, but unless someone guarantees the new one will be quiet, I'd wait until it fails to swap it in. If it does die somewhere, a local mechanic ought to be able to pop it in in less that 1/2 an hour.

Apparently a crappy fuel filter can make the pumps noisier / damage them. Have you replaced the filter ? That's about a 20 minute job.
