Default will a 1.8t bolt to the 20v and 12v trans?

i have a 89 quattro that someone swapped a 12 valve in. if something was to happen to that motor how easy would it be to swap a 1.8t in if i wanted to? i think it would free up a lot of room

Also interested.

I think the answer is no, though.

You'll need to address engine mounts and engine management, but yes, the 01A will bolt to pretty much all Audi engines from the 1.8T to the 32v and 40v V8's (except the RS6 engine).

There are several B3 and B4 gen cars with the 1.8T, various 32v V8's, 2.7tt, etc.

Yes, Audi are unusual in that their gearboxes are virtually universal in a given generation of cars. It makes for great flexibility.
However, I understand that the 1.8's and 2.8's had different ratio's. I read a great forum on this, but I can't find it.
I did find this though: http://www.vask.org.nz/index.php?topic=6354.0
It gives a table of the different gear ratio's. 1.8's generally had a closer ratio box by the looks of things, probably due to their relative lack of power and torque, so quite how this applies to the turbos I'm not sure.

However, I see no reason why the 1.8 won't bolt straight in, though apparently the tranny mount on 1.8's was different. As to whether this affects the install I don't know. Anyone?

Ah, here we go...
Try this one. Not sure if it's exactly the one I read last time, but the discussion is similar:

http://www.audiforums.com/forum/show...=150813&page=2

As an aside to all this, I linked to the tables on the site for the gear ratio's and altered my tyre's to the 235/40x17's I use. My Euro spec 2.6L V6 pulls virtually 3000rpm at 100km/h (62mph), which would appear to be the 1.8 close ratio boxes figures...

Cheers

Check out these two links:

Unfortunately the author, Siena, has been discredited for his business practices and doesn't post anymore, but that doesn't make these posts any less interesting & I reckon the jobs feasible, but boy it's a tight fit!

I don't know about the R8 4.2, but the RS6 and B7 RS4 V8's are a different design and apparently won't fit, or at least won't mate to the gearboxes.
