Default winter tires for 90Q

I'm looking to get winter tires for my 88 90Q. Manual and sticker on the car shows 175/70/14 as being the winter tire size, but when I go on a tire size calculator, it shows a 1.9% variance from the stock 195/60/14 size. If I try a 175/65/14, the variance is only 1.2% and 175/65/14 seems to be more common than 175/70/14.

As far as I'm concerned, I would go with the 175/65/14, but there must be a reason the manufacturer set 175/70/14 as the recommended size. Any input is appreciated. TIA!

Default Well I finally got to test the Hankook W409 Winter iPikes and they're excellent bang for the buck...

...and you'll easily get 2+ seasons out of them (Most Blizzaks on the other hand you're lucky to get more than 1 season out of them).

Default A reason... 70 series is a slightly softer ride than 65 series...

and back in the '80s, higher sidewall tires were more common.

Go with whatever give you the best ratio and you feel your money is best spent on. Speedo is calibrated for the error between 195/60r14 and 175/70r14... either way it's a little 'off'.

You will get slightly better fuel economy with the 70 series tire, and a softer sidewall, which can be beneficial in the winter.

Default My '88 80 (fwd) had 175/70s on the stock steelies...

...it rode real nice, got great mileage, but tires were hard to find in that size.
