X-Post from B5 forum... AC Question (a little long)
Replaced my compressor and accumulator and all the other little parts in between a few days ago. Refilled with PAG according to Bentley. Took the car to a garage to have them vacuum it so I could fill it. They did an evacuate AND a vacuum.. When I asked about the compressor oil, they told me the system would have no oil, PAG or r-134a. I added 2 pressurized PAG charges to make up for the supposed absence of oil... and then charged the system with a 18oz. (volume not weight) can of R-134a. My gauge has four measuring zones- from least to greatest, green, blue, yellow, red. Green is low, blue is full, yellow is Warn, and red is Danger. The gause is 5 psi away from the yellow (just below the top of the blue). The air is cool, but not cold, and if I sit still for a minute, it gets downright hot (ambient temp is about 85-100 depending on the time of day).
Before I switched the compressor, I was consistently getting a 22.3 on the cc head, which is a hi-side switch sporadic open. Obviously, I'm going to try switching out the hi-side switch with a spare. If I put in too much PAG, can I just use the compressor drain to pull some of it out, or do I have to evacuate the system and start over? I'd appreciate any additional insight as well. Thanks. BTW, this is the ATW engine, Zexel compressor.
I'm posting this here because the Bentley for my B5 A4 uses many illustrations on the AC system from B4 cars. I also have the Zexel compressor, which is the older B5 compressor and more likely to be in a B4.
Thanks!

Re: "They did an evacuate AND a vacuum" Same thing.
I thought of that....
They said they both evacuated and vacuumed it out... I thought it was the same thing too... perhaps there was some additionalpurging they did... I didn't want to have a shop do the recharge because I already had the stuff, and it was suppoed to cost almost $200, according to several different estimates and others' experiences on the B5 forums. I figured if I was going to the trouble of replacing parts, I might was well do as much work as possible. I wanted to try something new anyway
