Default You knew it was coming! Transmission Problems!!!

No "I Told You So"'s please.

I recently went on a road trip from Sacramento, Ca to Portland, Or. Drove up Mt. Hood to the Timberline lodge and did a bunch of (REALLY FUN) donuts in the ice. Somehow, in the process I broke something in my tranny. All gears work fine, but 2nd gear grinds really bad everytime I shift into it. Syncro? Is this something I can replace myself, or does it require loads of special tools? Perhaps it's something best left to a transmission shop? Maybe the local junior college? Anyway. Wanted some input. I'm also thinking about doing any possible upgrades to my tranny while I have it out and apart. Can I swap the gears from another tranny into mine for different ratios? For example... Can I grab a 5k tranny, pull it apart, and swap the gears into my tranny? Are they internally similar enough? I would love the better gear ratios. If it would work, I should be able to get any 5spd tranny, even if it's not quattro. Anybody know? I'll check out the family album for ideas. Anybody know any other upgrades I could do? Thanks.

Default Problem is............

if your synchro is bad, then 10 times out of 10, theres other items in there bad too!

The gearbox is a "sealed unit". meaning it keeps all the metal chips inside, with no way to purge them. Audi placed a couple magnets in strategic locations, but once the magnets get full the metal bits are free to roam around as they like. Often trashing bearings, bushings, and many other components inside the gearbox.

So you just cant crack open the gearbox and go after "just" the synchro. The differential bearings are often bad, which will cause the ring & pinion to wear excessively.

Plus you need a host of specialized tools to dis-assemble, then setup a rebuilt gearbox. The backlash on the ring & pinion must be set, or the newley rebuilt gearbox wont last very long at all.

Best bet is to find an Audi gearbox "rated" for your engines power! ;o) Otherwise gearbox swaps are going to an annual occurance for ya! ;O)

Default I told...

nevermind I'd do what Miktip suggested, because chances are in the long run trying to rebuild the one you have wouldn't be nearly as good (not to mention a bigger PITA and probably not cheap enough to make it worthwhile) as trying to replace the whole unit with something more suited for the 20vt... just my 2 cents. Can you say 6 spd? (j/k, unless you're independently wealthy...)
