Default The reasoning is that over 80% of all A3s here are purchased with DSG.

DSG+QTR+2.0T are not found anywhere because that combo doesn't exist. Given the costs of certification and the overall tiny percentage of people who will buy 2.0T w/only stick at an upcharge of probably $2500 over the Front Trak model, it only opens another two avenues of kvetching - manual only, and the higher price And of course you know most of those people are going to modify the car, so warranty costs will be higher, and/or there will be more bad will in the service drive when parts of a warranty are voided.

But since the TT is getting that driveline combo, the A3 might be able to piggyback on that certification.

"tiny percentage of people who will buy 2.0T w/only stick at an upcharge of probably $2500 over the Front Trak model"

Why do we be believe this? BMW offers both front wheel and all wheel drive on almost all drivetrains and I'm sure they do this for a reason. I see tons of 328xi's. People seem to be willing to pay a premium for an all wheel drive system over the upgraded motor. I know I would, yes the turner ability is key with the turbo for me but I'm sure the additional fuel economy over the 3.0 wouldn't hurt sales either.

Default The stickshift part is going to be the limiting factor. I don't think any other mass market model

out there limits you to stick only. It's not like the A3 is a halo car. TT maybe.

While personally I bemoan the lack of this choice (as well as a stick in the 3.2 model), I can see why they wouldn't want to expend a lot of resources on a car that sells at best 10,000 copies here per year (meanwhile they sell every one they can make in other markets).

Default My last car was '97 Integra GS-R, it was stick only (all lower models

had automatic as an option) Stick only didn't seem to limit the number I saw on the road so it may not be as limiting a factor as people make it out to be.

Default I'm willing to bet in 1997 there were more cars available with manual transmissions

than there are today.

Default A 2.0T QTR will probably push near $30K before options. Not sure how the large the market

for a non-sexy luxo-hatch will be.

I would love to be wrong :-)
