It would take some discipline to get those numbers.
VW R32 was EPA rated at 19/26.
When I had a 2.8 VR6 I was very disappointed with the mileage, but then I could never keep my foot out of that sweet, sweet pudding.
In the day of $3+ gas, the 2.0T is a godsend.

You're pumping six cylinders whether you need 'em or not. I had the same problem with the 2.8 vs the 1.8T in my A4 -- mileage sucked. This time, even if offered when I bought my A3, I would have instantly opted for the 2.0T. Quattro is nice for the bragging rights, but I've owned many Frontrack VAGs (TT, Golf, Jetta, Beetle) and never had a traction problem, even in the snow.

all relative. I had a 3.0 A4 Cab before and before that a Golf 1.8T. The difference in MPGs was extremely noticable, especially on long drives to the Alps (7-8 hours). Now that I'm back to the 4cyl I think the mpg will improve.

This a3 would be my stepping stone from the M3 into Prius/Civic. I don;t know if I have it in me to cope with hybrid or even new civic (30/40epa mpg) performance. If I can coax 25+ out of the a3, I'd be golden. Sure is nice to have the engine off at red light though.
