Default 5000 mile tuneup -- amazing difference

I own an A3 2.0T w/ DSG. I took the car in for the standard 5000 mile service, and I was shocked as to how different (read: better) the car felt after the tuneup! I am rather naive when it comes to understanding cars, but could someone explain why the car feels faster after the service -- specifically, the gear changes are noticably smoother and quicker (I would equate the feeling to how a road bike feels after you take it to a bike shop for a tuneup)?

As as side note, I have never owned/driven a manual transmission car before my A3. I've have not noticed a performance difference after taking an automatic transmission car in for service.

No. A placebo effect occurs when you expect that reaction or effect will occur subsequent to a particular action. I had no such expectation. I think my point was that I was suprised that an oil change would result in a noticable difference.

There is no "tune up" at 5k miles.

Taking the exact definition aside, by "placebo effect," he meant the change is in your mind.

Default I5 update - it's a reflash of the ECU, and makes the car feel quite different.

The A3 "learns" your driving patterns and habits, adjusts shift points, timing, boost, and other factors to your style. An ECU reflash resets all that.

Default Yes - I5 was a major update - it fixed numerous issues with...

Hesitation, no starts, hard starts, idle...

I had all of these issues. the update greatly improved my milage as well...

At first I thought the problem was APR but after the factory I5 update and before reflashing to the I5-APR update the car ran stronger that the original APR program. After applying the APR-I5 update the car was a rocket.
