Hi,

My starter motor makes a squeal / shriek on start-up and I was just wondering if anybody had any experience in removing the starter motor from above and then cleaning it? (I'll try this before replacing it with a new one).

Can I,
1. disconnect/remove battery,
2. remove battery tray
3. unclip/disconnect all cables to the starter motor and then finally be able to access all starter motor retaining bolts from above?

(The haynes manual states to get underneath the car and to then undo the power steering bracket before accessing the starter motor bolts, but is this an absolute prerequisite or can it all be done from above?).

Once out I’ll give the starter motor a clean with electrical contact cleaner.
