I just bought a used A3 with the standard radio which has poor sound quality. I am told I can add an amplifier for the front speakers and significantly improve the sound. Where could I put the amplifier? I don't want to put it in my little trunk.

I had it installed in the same place our OEM amp and subwoofer is behind the rear left (driver side) panel in the trunk. It is thin enough and has a built in fan that is stays cool enough with just the audi factory vents that are at the top of the panel. I also had a custom enclosure built for an 8 inch sub that fits in the recessed storage nook in the right panel of the trunk.
Just remember to ground the bose pin in the back of the HU to get a flat signal that the new amp can then process. The amp in plenty powerful enough to power the front speakers and a new sub. I just fade out the rear door speakers since they mess with the sound stage. Also disconnect the center dash tweeter, it's just a crappy tv speaker. I've attached a picture of where the new sub is enclosed. I can still lift the bottom panel to access the spare tire. Very stealth looking to help reduce potential theft. You will want to replace the front door speakers and tweeters to take advantage of the new amp. If you want the rear door speaker to continue to work, the factory amp in the HU powers those.
The EQ settings of the Zapco can be adjusted with a usb cord through the vent with supplied software and a laptop.

http://www.zapco.com/</a

The tweeters do a great job with mid-range and the location on the A pillar is perfect for voice location. This setup handles 50-25000 Hz. You could always add a subwoofer later. No need for more photos, it looks completely stock. The shop I had it done in had some install photos on their website, but the owner has closed up and moved out of state.
