I read that the 2000 facelift model of the A3 has an electric tailgate opener. Does this mean you can open it from inside the car? If so any chance of retro fitting to my '88 A3???? Sounds groovy. . .

Yep thats right it has an electric tailgate opener. The button, to open it electrically, is on the key, so you can open it from inside or out. Given this it might be a tricky option to fit if you want it exactly as it is in the A3 face-lift as you would need to mess with the alarm fob and car receiver.

Unless mine is broken, all it does is release the catch. The boot doesn't open more than a few mm.

Nope, not broken. All the "soft-touch" release does is that, RELEASE the tailgate.
