they have helicopter flying above the highway tagging speeders and then radio-ing the patrol cars ahead to wait for the speeders and then pull them over...

thats exactly what happened to me, but i did not see any planes or helicopters. I'm always looking for people flying around and didn't see anything. Sigh.......

Totally automatic fines appear in the post...which is why 'twinning' is becoming very popular here.

you are correct that it is often too late. The problem is not the Valentine; it's the laws of physics. Laser produces almost no "splash" the way microwaves do, so you get little chance to hear a warning until you're in range.
As always, being the first car in line cancels much of the advantage of a detector. Instant-on KA band can nail you even with a V1.
My batting average so far: over a dozen instances of getting adequate advance warning of Lidar from my V1, one of getting no advance at all (but I was lucky). No tickets since I got my V1.

I'll wave to you in the breakdown lane as you make your donation to the boys in blue.
I have not gotten one single ticket since I got my V1.
Of course, like any instrument, detectors require that you buy a good one and read it properly, then adjust your driving habits accordingly (and I'm not talking about slamming on the brakes when it squawks). Good drivers know how to combine their eyes, their position in traffic flow, and a detector, to move very quickly down the road.
If you choose to forego one or more of those advantages, that's your business, of course.

No detector can prevent an aircraft with a stopwatch from measuring your speed.
For my $400 I have been able to avoid getting any tickets at all for the past five years. Discounting times when others' brake lights or seeing the cruiser way in advance meant the V1 was not the lifesaver it can be, I still have avoided at least a half-dozen whoppers and a few lesser infractions.
The last ticket I got prior to V1 ownership was about $200 for 85 in a 50 zone in the Adirondacks.
You do the math.
